Deborah Guest – Campus Director
Deborah is our fearless leader!
She has worked in the post-secondary field since 1990 and has acted as an Eastern Instructor, Admissions Consultant and Director. She is responsible for the overall campus operations, including student support, staffing, scheduling and planning.
Cathy Hudson – Financial Aid Officer
Cathy has been working with Eastern College for 17 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University and a post – secondary diploma in Accounting. She has worked in many different roles from Career Services to Education Consultant but claims her current role as Financial Aid Officer is her favorite. She loves meeting with new students and advising each on different financial options for school.
Michael Aylward – Financial Aid Officer
An honors graduate from the Accounting and Payroll Administrator program, Michael has been employed with Eastern College since his graduation. After working for nineteen years in the taxi cab industry in St. John’s, Michael decided to return to school in 2014. Michael graduated from the Accounting and Payroll Administrator program in 2015 and was the recipient of the Leslie Ryan Memorial Student of the Year award for the 2014/15 academic year. Michael is a firm believer and is proof that it is never too late to start a new career.
Bernadette Noftall – Education Consultant
With 13 years’ experience as an Education Consultant, and a graduate at Eastern College, Bernadette is here to ensure positive outcomes for all potential students and help them through the registration process. Bernadette is also here to help answer any questions and discuss job opportunities within your field of interest.

Daphne Hart – Employment Specialist, Instructor
Daphne comes from a 20+years of training/facilitation/diversity background and considers the role of Employment Specialist by far her most fulfilling. She has held roles as a Business facilitator with the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs-NLOWE and an Industry Liaison with Women In Resource Development Corporation-an advocacy group ensuring that women were hired on the major projects happening in the province.
Daphne has a certificate in Entrepreneurship/Business from the Gardiner Institute and her Bachelor of Arts is still in progress. Her focus is to instruct, support, encourage and empower her students readying them for the workplace. She teaches them resume writing, job search skills, strategic interviewing techniques and keeps them informed about employment opportunities. Daphne also develops trusting working relationships between Eastern Academy and employers to find the right fit for the student’s field placements.
Lori Whitten – Administrative Assistant
Lori Whitten is a graduate of our Executive Administrative Specialist Program. Lori’s 14 years of experience in the Customer Service industry is evident as she greets you with her welcoming smile and friendly demeanor. Lori’s hard work ethic and desire to help others makes her an asset to our team.
Christine Horne – Coordinator: Student Records/Admin
Christine is a recent graduate of Eastern College from the Administrative Specialist program. She started work at Eastern College immediately following graduation in the position of Student Records/ Administrative Coordinator. Her education, along with almost 10 years of experience in customer service, has provided her the skills to work directly with staff and students to help maintain various aspects of daily campus activity.
Tina Neary – Instructor: Child & Youth Care With Addictions Support Worker
Tina has been involved with young people and families for over 25 years having received her Child and Youth worker diploma from Mohawk College and her undergraduate degree from the Child and Youth Care program at Ryerson University in Ontario. Her ongoing commitment to children, youth and their families motivated her to pursue a Masters in Childhood Studies also from Ryerson University. Tina is now pursuing the application process to enroll in a PhD program offered through Memorial University.
Tina has a multitude of experience in the field of child and youth care. The majority of her career took place in Ontario where her professional experience included working in various settings in children’s mental health, residential, education, child welfare, youth criminal justice and private practice. Tina has been an instructor within the Child and Youth Care program at Ryerson University since 2007 and has continued instructing CYC online/distance education courses since relocating to Newfoundland two years ago. Tina continues to focus on many special projects involving children and families within the mental health sectors and continues to be actively involved in many curriculum and training development opportunities.
Judy Batten – Instructor: Massage Therapy
Judy is a Registered Massage Therapist who graduated from Academy Canada in 2012 with the President’s Award. She is in good standing with both the CMTNL and NLMTA. Judy began working as a part-time instructor with Eastern College August 2015 while also working at a very busy clinic in St. John’s. Judy loves teaching and incorporates a very hands on approach to her daily classes.

Natasha Murthy – Instructor: Massage Therapy
Jodine McCormack – Clinic Supervisor: Massage Therapy
As a Clinical Supervisor for the Massage Therapy program, Jodine brings over 12 years of clinical experience to her students. After graduating from ICT Northumberland College in Halifax, Jodine practiced in a variety of spa and clinical settings in Nova Scotia & Ontario before moving back to Newfoundland. As part of her continuing education, Jodine has completed specialized courses in Chronic Pain management, Myofascial release, Pregnancy Massage and is a certified contemporary cupping therapist. She now operates a home-based Massage Therapy Clinic in Witless Bay.
Kerri Hayley – Instructor: Child & Youth Care
Kerri holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (with Distinction) in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology. Kerri has 18 years combined experience in the field of Child and Youth Care, Behaviour Management, Family Support, Corrections, Counselling for; Addictions, Depression, Anxiety, Eating Disorders, Self Esteem issues, Relationship issues, Anger Management, Grief, Victims of violence. In her Counselling practice Kerri Specializes in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy.
Kerri also holds certification in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Psychological First Aid, Violence Action and Awareness Training, and Narrative Therapy and Abuse Prevention. Kerri presently instructs the Child and Youth Care with Addictions Support Program at Eastern College on a part time basis and practices Counselling in Private Practice.
Shawn Mercer – Instructor: Child & Youth Care
With 12 years of experience working with children, youth and families, Shawn has worked in the government, private and non-profit sectors of this field in Newfoundland and in the UK. He has delivered case management services in child protection, children in care, foster care supervision, adoption work, as well as therapeutic residential Child and Youth care services. Shawn received his Bachelor degree in Social Work from Memorial University of Newfoundland and is currently enrolled in the Masters of CYC at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. Shawn uses stories, practical examples from the field as well as extensive theory based knowledge with hope to develop and inspire budding practitioners in this challenging yet rewarding field of work.
Stacy Gardner – Instructor: Child & Youth Care
Stacy has more than 20 years’ experience working in various roles in the Field of Child and Youth Work. An honours graduate of the competitive Child and Youth Care Program at George Brown College in Toronto, Stacy continued her professional career in Toronto working with ground-breaking professionals and well-established programs. Stacy presented at a National Symposium on ‘Working with youth in Crisis’ in Ontario, and was employed many years at Covenant House, Canada’s largest youth facility; where she developed and facilitated many empowerment and counselling programs for at-risk youth. Some of her roles at CH have included: Front-line youth worker in a 100-bed unisex youth shelter, Runaway Prevention Facilitator, and Vocational Counsellor. Her clients have ranged from 6 years old (youth worker in an elementary school), to mid-teens (working with complex mental health issues in a treatment centre), to late adult (crisis counsellor for the City of Toronto).
Stacy’s work experience has provided her direct contact with the many complexities that young people encounter from many diverse situations: from abuse to human trafficking, from gang violence to prostitution, from addictions to family reconciliation, from immigration issues to mental health approaches. Stacy believes in the power of expression, often using the arts to explore ‘the complex narrative’ of each clients’ own life-story. Stacy enjoys teaching through meaningful exchanges, examples of real-life clients and situations, and breaking down the fundamentals of Child and Youth Work, a field she remains passionate about.
George Pomroy – Instructor: Multiple Programs
With Microsoft Certification at the Expert level, and 20 years teaching experience, George has been designated an Authorized Microsoft Instructor. Combined with specialized training in Vocational Education, this has allowed George to amass the skills and experience needed to instruct and demonstrate lessons and ideas to students using an effective, dynamic, and adaptable style. With knowledge of current trends, George has also been involved in curriculum development, resulting in training that targets market needs. If you enjoy a fun-filled, energetic learning environment, then a class with George fills the bill!
Richard Murphy – Instructor: Multiple Programs
Richard obtained his Bachelor of Commerce from Memorial University in 1988, and has 25 years of payroll and accounting experience gained from working in auditing, oil and gas, medical and education industries.
Richard started instructing at Eastern College in 2003, the first college to offer the Canadian Payroll Association Certification Program in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. In 2014, he began instructing online with the Canadian Payroll Association. Since 2008, Richard has been invited to be a subject matter expert, has been part of the CPA Online Content Update Team and is part of the newly formed Education Platform Review Team. He received the Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation in 2011 and has been recognized by the Canadian Payroll Association in 2012 for the Board of Director’s Award. Richard is particularly proud that a number of his students are silver and gold medal winners for the highest mark in Atlantic Canada for the Payroll Compliance Practitioner designation from the Canadian Payroll Association.
Cindy Howlett – Instructor: Multiple Programs
Bonnie Churchill – Instructor: Multiple Programs
With 20+ yrs. experience, Bonnie has worked in the both Oil and Gas Industry, and the Assisted Living Field. Her knowledge is a combination of education, and work experience.
As the Financial/Administrative Lead for Investcan Energy and QUEBENERGIE both subsidiaries of SCDM Energie, a privately held company headquartered in Paris, France, she specialized in applying the principles of accounting to analyze financial information and prepare financial reports in conjunction with Joint Ventures.
Preparation of the operation and capital budgets, overseeing a Nursing Team, Food Services, Marketing initiatives, Regulatory Committees and Project Management are just some of the duties she held as the Administrator of an Assisted Living Facility; Elizabeth Towers, owned and operated by Chartwell Senior Housing headquartered in Mississauga Ontario.
Combined with experience some fields of study include Business, Accounting, Payroll, Train the Trainer in Respiratory Therapy and Introduction to Petroleum. With studies always continuing.
Kim Smart – Instructor: PCA
Kim has been a nurse for over 20+ years working in various areas such as acute care, Long Term Care, community, oral surgery, cosmetic surgery and teaching. Kim graduated from the General Hospital School of Nursing and recently graduated with her Post RN BN degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, October 2013. In this teaching role, Kim’ professionalism along with her practical experience from all her various nursing roles is incorporated in all aspects of the program. Kim is presently enrolled at Memorial University of Newfoundland pursuing her Post Secondary Instructor Certification.
Diane Butler – Instructor: PCA
Diane graduated from nursing 34 years this September. Over the years she has have worked in many fields of nursing; including Urology, Mental Health, Pediatrics, Long Term Care, Intensive Care and Coronary Care and presently is working an occasional shift in Long Term Care. Diane enjoys teaching care givers and particularly enjoy telling many stories related to her experiences. She is presently working on her diploma in teaching adult learners from MUN. With all the changes in the Nurse’s role, it is a delight to instruct the HSW/PCA students in the importance of their roles in health care. They are the ‘eyes and the ears’ of Nurses!
Tara Wall – Instructor: Pharmacy
Since graduating from Memorial School of Pharmacy in 2006, Tara has been practicing as a community pharmacist at various retail pharmacies. As a result, she has worked closely with many pharmacy assistants and has developed a great appreciation for their contribution to providing quality healthcare. While teaching, Tara continues to work as a pharmacist in the community to ensure that she is training students with the most up-to-date knowledge and skills required to be successful in the workplace. In the classroom, she strives to incorporate hands-on practice and encourages student participation and interaction to maximize student learning.
Glen Brophy – Instructor: IT
With nearly 15 years of experience in the IT sector, Glen has provided IT support for high profile clients in both the private and public sectors that include ExxonMobil, Memorial University, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information. He has managed computer networks and IT infrastructure services, as well as provided client support both remotely and on-site. Glen received his first bachelor’s degree from Memorial University and is currently enrolled in Memorial’s Bachelor of Education program. Glen makes extensive use of hands-on exercises with examples to impart solid IT skills essential to today’s computing environments, as well as to engage students with a spirit of curiosity and an inherent enthusiasm for technology.
