Overview of Our Event Planning Program in St John’s
Eastern Academy’s Event Planner/Public Relations Specialist program offers graduates the opportunity to work in one of the most exciting and rewarding careers available. Students will be equipped with the leadership, organizational and creative skills needed to build careers in a variety of event and promotions settings. Upon graduation, you will be ready to plan and deliver everything from elaborate weddings to major corporate conferences, sporting events, trade shows and public festivals. Our event planning program in St John’s focuses on project management, marketing, financial planning, human resources, public relations, fundraising/sponsorship and strategic communication. While enrolled, you will gain practical experience coordinating community events while building connections and enhancing your resume. Besides, we also have career coaches on board with us who can help you land a job.

Event Planner/Public Relations Specialists are employed by tourism associations, trade and professional associations, convention and conference centers, governments and by conference and event planning companies, or they may be self-employed.
The Government of Newfoundland & Labrador has launched an aggressive marketing strategy (called “Uncommon Potential”) aimed at increasing tourism activity in the province. Its success has created an increased demand for professionals with planning and public relations skills. The report states:
“Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world with the demand for travel increasing. (p.12) When the Vision was launched in 2009, the tourism industry was contributing $790 million (2007) to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador, supporting almost 13,000 direct jobs in tourism and generating significant economic and cultural spinoff. In 2015, the halfway point to the Vision’s target of doubling tourism spending by 2020, there has been no shortage of accomplishments. Most notably, tourism has grown to contribute approximately $1.1 billion (2013) to the provincial economy and is responsible for over 18,000 direct jobs. “(p.6)
More specifically, a 2016 Northeast Avalon Tourism report stressed that future growth is dependent on building industries that need graduates like ours. They said:
“Future tourism growth will be optimized by continuing to focus on leveraging high-yield market sectors including: Meetings, Conventions and Incentive Travel (MCIT), Sport Tourism and Leisure Travel – Group Tour and FIT” (p.18).

High School Graduates or Equivalent
High School graduates or equivalent are eligible for admission to the Event Planner/Public Relations Specialist program. Students must complete an application form and provide a copy of High School, Adult Basic Education, or G.E.D. results.
Mature students are eligible for admission to the Event Planner/Public Relations Specialist program. Students must be 19 years of age, or older, complete an application form and provide a copy of their most recent marks.
Preferred Entrance Requirement:
Level 3 Academic English
A student must obtain an overall grade, in each module of at least 70% in order to graduate and receive a diploma. A student must complete all requirements of the Student Success Strategies and Career Planning and Preparation modules as well as the Work Term requirements.
